Inventory Settings¶
Overview¶
Inventory Settings configures stock tracking and low stock notifications for your store. Get notified when products run low on stock and control how out-of-stock items are displayed to customers.
Accessing Inventory Settings¶
Navigate to: Modules > System Settings > Inventory

Default Inventory Tracking¶
Configure the default inventory tracking behavior for new products.
Track Inventory by Default¶
- Type: Toggle switch (On/Off)
- Default: Off
- Purpose: Set the default value for inventory tracking when creating new products
When Enabled:
- New products will have inventory tracking enabled by default
- Stock levels will be monitored for new products
- Products will appear in the Inventory Management page
When Disabled:
- New products will have inventory tracking disabled by default
- Stock levels won't be monitored (unlimited stock assumed)
- Products won't appear in the Inventory Management page unless manually enabled
Note: This setting only affects the default value for new products. You can always override the inventory tracking setting on individual products.
Low Stock Notifications¶
Configure automatic notifications when product stock drops below a threshold.
Enable Low Stock Notifications¶
- Type: Toggle switch (On/Off)
- Default: Off
- Purpose: Receive notifications when product stock drops below the threshold
When Enabled:
- You will receive notifications when any product's stock reaches or goes below the threshold
- Helps prevent stockouts by alerting you early
- Can be overridden per-product using the Min Quantity field
When Disabled:
- No automatic low stock alerts
- You must manually monitor inventory levels
Default Low Stock Threshold¶
- Type: Number input with "units" suffix
- Default: 10
- Visibility: Only appears when Low Stock Notifications is enabled
- Purpose: Set the stock level that triggers a notification
How It Works:
- Products with stock at or below this quantity will trigger a notification
- Example: If set to 10, you'll be notified when a product has 10 or fewer items
- Can be overridden per-product by setting the Min Quantity field on individual products
Best Practices:
| Scenario | Recommended Threshold |
|---|---|
| Fast-moving products | 20-50 units |
| Regular products | 10-20 units |
| Slow-moving products | 5-10 units |
| Made-to-order items | 0-2 units |
Allow Backorder (Pre-orders)¶
The Allow Backorder feature lets you continue selling products even when they're out of stock. This works like Shopify's "Continue selling when out of stock" option.
How It Works¶
| Inventory Setting | Allow Backorder | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Track Inventory OFF | N/A | Unlimited stock, no validation |
| Track Inventory ON | OFF | Hard block when stock = 0 |
| Track Inventory ON | ON | Can oversell, stock goes negative (Pre-order) |
Setting Allow Backorder¶
Allow Backorder is configured per-product (and optionally per-variation):
- Go to Products → Select a product → Edit
- In the Pricing & Inventory tab, enable Track Inventory
- Toggle Allow Backorder to enable pre-orders for this product
For Products with Variations:
- Each variation can inherit the product's backorder setting or override it
- In the Manage Variations page, use the Backorder tab in Batch Actions to:
- Inherit from Product: Use the parent product's setting
- Allow Backorder: Override to allow pre-orders
- Disallow Backorder: Override to block when out of stock
Customer Experience¶
When a product is out of stock but backorder is allowed:
- Instead of "Out of Stock" button, customers see a "Pre-order" button
- A message appears: "This item is currently out of stock but available for pre-order."
- Customers can still add the item to cart and complete checkout
- The same rules apply to both customers and admin users
Admin Cart Editing¶
When editing carts in the admin panel:
- Green hint: Sufficient stock available
- Yellow/Warning hint: Exceeds stock but backorder is allowed
- Red/Danger hint: Exceeds stock and backorder is NOT allowed (blocked)
This helps administrators understand stock status when manually editing customer carts.
Out of Stock Display¶
Configure how out-of-stock products and variants appear to customers.
Product Out of Stock Behavior¶
- Type: Dropdown selection
- Default: Show with badge
- Purpose: Control how out-of-stock products appear in product listings
Options:
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Show with badge | Product remains visible with an "Out of Stock" badge |
| Hide completely | Product is hidden from listings until back in stock |
When to Use Each:
- Show with badge: Customers can see what's coming back, create waitlists
- Hide completely: Cleaner catalog, no frustration from unavailable items
Variant Out of Stock Behavior¶
- Type: Dropdown selection
- Default: Show with badge
- Purpose: Control how out-of-stock variants appear on product detail pages
Options:
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Show with badge | Variant option remains visible but marked as out of stock |
| Hide completely | Variant option is hidden until back in stock |
Example:
For a T-shirt with sizes S, M, L, XL where M is out of stock:
- Show with badge: All sizes shown, M displays "Out of Stock"
- Hide completely: Only S, L, XL shown as options
