ChariBaaS

Take payment in Morocco from a Maroc Pay wallet by showing a QR code, or from a Visa or Mastercard, settled in dirhams

What Is ChariBaaS?

ChariBaaS is the payment platform of Chari Money, a Moroccan payment institution licensed and supervised by Bank Al-Maghrib, the country's central bank. It lets a Moroccan store take money online in dirhams, either from a mobile wallet or from a bank card.

Most gateways on this platform offer one route to payment: the customer types a card number. ChariBaaS offers two, and the second one is the interesting one for Morocco. Your customer can pay from their mobile wallet by scanning a code, without a card being involved at all.

Money arrives in a Chari merchant wallet that belongs to you. It is identified by a phone number rather than an account number, which is how the Moroccan mobile wallet system works throughout.

Key Features

  • Maroc Pay Wallet Payments: Show the customer a code, they scan it with their wallet app, and the payment lands. No card, no card number, no bank redirect.
  • Cards With 3-D Secure: Visa and Mastercard are supported, confirmed through the customer's own bank in the usual way.
  • Regulated Locally: Chari Money operates under a Bank Al-Maghrib payment institution licence, so your money is handled inside the Moroccan regulatory framework rather than routed abroad.
  • Settled in Dirhams: Payments are taken and settled in MAD. There is no currency conversion sitting between you and your revenue.
  • Interoperable: Maroc Pay is a national network, so a customer is not required to use one particular app. Wallets from different providers can pay the same code.
  • Test Environment: A full sandbox lets you run the whole payment journey before a real customer sees it.
  • Built Into Trinavo: The integration ships with your store. Nothing to install and no developer to hire.

Two Ways Your Customers Can Pay

By wallet, using a code. At checkout the customer is shown a code on screen. They open their wallet app, scan it, confirm the amount, and the page updates by itself as soon as the money arrives. This is the option most Moroccan stores will want to lead with. It is quick, it is familiar to anyone already using a mobile wallet, and no card details exist anywhere in the process.

By card. The customer enters their card details and confirms the payment with their bank through 3-D Secure, exactly as they would on any other card gateway.

You choose which of these your store offers. Wallet payments are switched on by default. Card payments are switched off by default, deliberately, for a reason worth reading about below.

Why This Matters in Morocco

Card ownership in Morocco is real but far from universal, and a good number of people who do hold a card are cautious about typing it into a website. Mobile wallets have grown quickly precisely because they solve that: the money is already on the phone, the payment is confirmed inside an app the customer already trusts, and nothing sensitive is typed into a browser.

For a Moroccan store, that changes who can actually buy from you. A customer without a card, or without the confidence to use one online, is not a lost sale any more. They scan a code and pay.

It also removes a familiar problem at the other end. Getting a card gateway in Morocco has historically meant a company file, a bank relationship, and a wait. Chari Money is set up to onboard merchants directly, which puts online payment within reach of smaller businesses that a traditional card acquirer would not have taken on.

Supported Regions and Currencies

ChariBaaS is a Moroccan service for Moroccan merchants, and it settles in Moroccan dirhams only.

If your store prices in another currency, Trinavo converts the amount to dirhams using your own exchange rates before the payment is created, so you can keep pricing in whatever currency your customers think in.

If you are trading from outside Morocco, this is not the gateway for you. Look at the other options on this page instead.

Integration with Trinavo

Your store is ready for ChariBaaS out of the box. To connect it, ask Chari for access, and they give you two things: an API key, and a merchant wallet, which is simply a phone number beginning with +212.

There is one step here that catches people out, so it is worth stating plainly. Chari only accepts requests coming from servers they already know about. You have to give them the address of the server your store runs on, and until you do, nothing will work and every payment will fail with an authorisation error. Your store provider can tell you that address if you are not sure.

You also invent a password of your own and give it to Chari. Your store uses it to check that a payment confirmation genuinely came from them rather than from someone pretending to be them. Alongside it you copy one address out of your payment settings and send that to Chari as well, so they know where to send confirmations.

After that, you choose which payment routes to offer, keep test mode on while you try it, and switch to your live credentials when Chari approves your account.

About Card Payments

Card payments on ChariBaaS work differently from most gateways on this platform, and you should understand the difference before you switch them on.

With a typical gateway, the customer is sent away to the provider's own payment page, types their card there, and comes back. The card number never touches your store. ChariBaaS does not offer a page like that. Its card option asks the customer to type their card number on your checkout page, which your store then passes on to Chari.

That means handling card data becomes your responsibility rather than the provider's, and it is something a business needs to be permitted and equipped to do. This is why Trinavo ships the card option switched off. Turning it on should be a decision you make knowingly, ideally after checking with Chari and your own advisers.

The wallet option carries none of this. No card details are involved at any point, so if you are unsure, wallet payments are the straightforward choice and cover the majority of Moroccan customers well.

How Confirmation Works

An order is marked as paid when Chari confirms the payment directly to your store, server to server. It is not marked as paid because the customer's browser came back saying so.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. A browser can be closed, refreshed, or interfered with, and a page returning with a success message is not proof that money moved. Waiting for Chari's own confirmation means an order is only ever released against a payment that genuinely happened, and it means a customer who closes their tab mid-payment still gets their order confirmed when the money lands.

For wallet payments, the checkout page waits and updates itself the moment the confirmation arrives, so the customer does not have to do anything after scanning.

Security and Compliance

Chari Money is licensed and supervised by Bank Al-Maghrib, and card payments are confirmed through 3-D Secure with the customer's own bank.

On your store's side, every payment confirmation is checked before it is accepted. The password you share with Chari is verified, the amount is compared against what was actually charged, and the receiving wallet is checked to be yours. A confirmation that fails any of those checks is recorded but never marks an order as paid.

Refunds are not issued from your store at present. You issue them from your Chari Partner Back Office, and the order in your dashboard is updated to match.

Getting Started

Request access through the form at baas.ma. Chari will give you an API key and open your merchant wallet, and they will ask which server your store runs from so they can allow it. If you want to offer card payments as well, ask them to enable the card service, because it is off unless requested.

Then open payment settings in your Trinavo store, choose ChariBaaS, paste in your key and wallet number, set your notification password, and send Chari the notification address your store shows you. Leave test mode on until you have run a payment through end to end.

For a Moroccan store that has been taking orders over chat and arranging payment by hand, this is the shortest route to a checkout that simply works.
