Barcode Generator

Watch this tutorial to learn how to: Barcode Generator.

Steps in this tutorial

  1. Let every product get its barcode automatically, with your own prefix, and never the same barcode on two products.
  2. Open Modules and go to Settings.
  3. Open the Settings group.
  4. Click Barcode Generator.
  5. Switch this on, and a product saved without a barcode gets one by itself. You can still type or scan your own.
  6. Choose EAN-13: thirteen digits, like the barcodes printed on retail packages.
  7. Type the digits every barcode starts with. Codes from 20 to 29 are kept for use inside your own shop, so 29 is a safe choice.
  8. An EAN-13 is always thirteen digits: your prefix, then the number, then one check digit that scanners use.
  9. The next barcode is made from this number. Start above the codes you typed by hand; a number already in use is skipped anyway.
  10. Give each size and colour its own barcode, so the point of sale picks the exact one when it is scanned.
  11. The preview shows the next barcode for a product, and the two after it for its variations.
  12. This stays on: a barcode another product already uses is refused. A product and its own variations can still share one.
  13. Save the settings.
  14. Your products from before have no barcode yet. Generate Missing Barcodes gives them one.
  15. A barcode you already have is never changed, because it may already be printed on your labels. Confirm.
  16. Done: every product and variation without a barcode now has one.
  17. Now open a product to see its new barcode.
  18. Open the Catalog Management group.
  19. Click Products.
  20. Edit the paper filters.
  21. The barcode is under Specifications.
  22. Here is the barcode it was given: your prefix 29, the number, and the check digit. You can still change it by hand.
  23. Now try the barcode of the coffee beans, which is already printed on another product.
  24. Save the product.
  25. It is refused, and it tells you which product already has that barcode.
  26. From now on, every new product gets its barcode on save, and Generate Barcode next to the field makes the next one whenever you need it.
